Autoimmune Diseases and Immune System Disorders

Our immune system requires balance. When the immune system is not active enough- we are more susceptible to infections, diseases, and even cancers. When our immune system is overreactive, we are more predisposed to autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Lupus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Psoriasis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis just to name a few.

Autoimmune Treatment

We see patients on conventional biological treatments for autoimmunity and see our role as complementary with the hope that over time we can lessen the need for immune system modulators. We also see patients who have chosen not to use these types of medications on their health journey.

In thinking about the immune system from a whole health perspective, one cannot ignore the fact that in autoimmune disease, the body is, in essence, at war with itself. We, therefore, must also consider what is going on in the mind and the subconscious. We are our own worst critics. The tendency toward self-loathing and lack of self-compassion could influence not only our choices but our body’s function.

Acknowledging the hidden beliefs and blocks to good health are sometimes the critical missing link in immune system dysfunction. Do you love yourself? Or is your critical thought pattern fighting your own body? Sometimes, in the course of treatment, these hard questions come up and need to be addressed.
