How Does Estrogen Affect Your Thyroid?
Hypothyroidism or an under-producing thyroid gland is a disease of women. A woman is 5-8 times more likely to develop hypothyroidism in her lifetime than a man.

Women’s hormones are a moving target. Every month there is a cyclical dance that results in menstrual flow or a period. Sometimes that dance can be off. If the balance of estrogen and progesterone are off in relationship to each other during parts of the cycle symptoms can occur such as premenstrual mood changes, irregular or heavy bleeding or missing periods. To complicate things further, for women, the menstrual cycle is a barometer of health. If other imbalances are present (such as thyroid, stress hormones, micronutrient or detoxification issues) then this can also factor into menstrual symptoms. There of course can be structural abnormalities that need to be ruled out as well and if this is the case we will always either refer for imaging, perform a gynecological exam or refer out to gynecology if needed. Often our patients come to us having had more serious problems ruled out and just needing some help balancing out these symptoms using the functional medical model.
