Happy New Year!

Glitter is the best option, but first, we toast . . .

. . . to our past year’s accomplishments and to new beginnings! Sometimes a fresh start is just what we need. New year’s resolutions or not, it’s a great time to reflect and set good intentions.

Here is one idea I often dive into this time of year. You may have heard of vision boards. They are a visual way of presenting a brainstorm of ideas. Vision boards are often dream boards but they actually come in all shapes, sizes, and content. Anything from career-focused boards that we can keep at work to travel boards, and even food vision boards. The list goes on!

This year I’ll be trying an interior design inspiration board. I have been seeing some fun trends that I’d like to try in my home. Like including more inherited pieces, vintage finds, unique art (something no one else will have), and other fun things that are personal to me and my family. I feel drawn towards sparkle, shine, light, glass, pops of color, as well as adding more natural elements like wood & live house plants. My motto this year . . . there is no such thing as SPARKLING too much!

That’s me. What about you? If you try this idea with your family, friends, or on your own and would like to share some photos with us, we would love to see!

What is Metabolic Detoxification?

Package Up Harmful Substances & Ship Them Out

“Excuse me, I’d like to Return this Please”

Metabolic detoxification refers to our body’s ability to package up harmful substances in our biological system and eliminate them. Some examples of toxicants that we may be exposed to from the environment include pesticides, herbicides, food additives (including hormones & antibiotics), plastics, heavy metals, and cigarette smoke. I also feel that the Standard American Diet which often has high sugar, high calorie foods that are nutrient poor also contributes to the total toxic burden.

Symptoms can occur when our system is overwhelmed by the toxic load.  Genetically, some people are better detoxifiers than others. There is also variation in environmental exposures throughout a lifetime. Where you grew up, the food you eat, the products you use in the home and personal products used are all factors that contribute to the total body toxic burden. Additionally, metabolic detoxification is biologically expensive. We “use up” certain vitamins and minerals in the process and how . . .

Quinoa, Kale, White Bean, Power Bowl

Power Bowl Recipe!

Kate Swords, CNS, Functional Medicine Nutritionist

Research suggests a connection between low iron levels and symptoms of anxiety. The iron in this recipe is supplied by the greens, the white beans, the pumpkin seeds, and the quinoa. The lemon juice in the dressing aids in the absorption of it. It’s not only healthy, it’s delicious! The beauty of this bowl is you may double the dressing and add whatever veggies that you enjoy.
1 oz of pumpkin seeds packs around 2.3 mg of iron . . .
