July bursts in on the scene like a warm summer dream, providing space for plenty of outdoor activity, surrounded by nature with friends and family.
We sure hope you are finding many ways to enjoy this summer and stay happy and healthy.
Tips For A Safe & Fun Summer
Be Active, Eat Clean, Stay Cool!
Making physical activity a steady part of our lifestyle is crucial during every season. The warm summer weather can make it easier to exercise outdoors and get the whole family involved. Be sure to take some precautions so you don’t get overheated in the hot weather.
· Timing is important ~ Exercise in the morning or evening when it’s usually cooler outside and the sun isn’t as strong (Between 10am-4pm are the UV rays are the strongest). And look for shady areas under trees at the park or hike through the woods. If it’s a very hot day look for a place to swim.
· Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will help your body sweat and cool down.
· Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing and try a wide-brimmed hat. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV light.
· Physical activity is important for everyone and can involve the whole family. Check out the park, turn on some music, dance, or get pedometers for everyone and have a friendly competition to see who can log the most steps each day.
· Plan an active vacation ~ camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling are great ways to spend time in nature and do a lot of moving. If you’re visiting a city, or a town with shops near an ocean consider renting bicycles or taking a walking tour.
· Eating clean will improve your health and help give you the stamina for all of these activities.
· Summer is perfect for outdoor meals with friends and family. Save the sweat and keep it cool with refreshing salads, melons, and berries ~ add color and flavor to picnics and cookouts.
· If you grill, choose lean meat (fish, chicken, and veggies) and go for the gold ~ golden brown grill marks. Remember not to char your grilled items. Blackened food and charred bits can increase health risks.
The Calcium Conundrum
Many people take calcium supplements to benefit bone health. There is, however, a dose ceiling where taking too much can increase perhaps cardiovascular risk. The recommendation for osteopenia and osteoporosis prevention and treatment is often about 1200 mg per day of calcium. Many people struggle with getting this in through the diet either due to dietary restrictions or preferences, particularly with the exclusion of the calcium heavy hitter ~ dairy.
Calcium and the Cardiovascular System
There are multiple studies showing that calcium supplementation over prolonged periods of time at doses exceeding 600 mg may increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality. There seems to be a dose relationship in that higher doses infer greater risk.
In a 2021 meta-analysis in the journal Nutrients of randomized controlled trials, it was found that calcium supplementation in doses of 700 – 1200 mg (which is often the dose for bone health) was found to be associated with a 15% higher cardiovascular mortality.
The Skinny On Omega-3 Fat
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (commonly known as fish oils – EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are one of the most studied and utilized dietary supplements. The observation of Greenland Inuit populations (formerly known as Eskimo) had an extremely low incidence of coronary artery disease instigated the study of omega-3 fatty acids. The traditional dietary pattern of Inuit populations consists of large quantities of fatty fish and the low risk of heart disease was thought to be related.
For this reason, the use of omega-3 fat has mostly been studied for the prevention and treatment of heart disease-related issues. Omega-3 fats are utilized for a variety of other reasons including inflammation and brain health, but we will focus on cardiovascular benefits given that is where most of the focus has been.
Omega-3 Fat is Essential
The first thing to know about omega-3 fat – EPA and DHA are that it is essential. This means our body cannot make it and it must come from dietary sources. So here is the first consideration when deciding if taking omega-3 fat is right for your health… Are you getting enough in your diet?
