THE SIMPLE BUT HARD-HITTING FACTS

According to the CDC and decades of research, people who are overweight or have obesity, compared to those who have a healthy weight, are at increased risk for many serious diseases and negative health conditions.

These include:

  • Almost all causes of death (mortality)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (dyslipidemia)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis (breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
  • Sleep apnea and/or breathing problems
  • Many types of cancer
  • Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders
  • Body pain and difficulty with physical movement and functioning
  • Lower quality of life

Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher. Obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or higher.

A Functional Approach to Weight Loss

Dr. Elisa Mercuro, DO, Board Certified in Obesity Medicine, & Certified Functional Medicine Doctor

Yes, weight gain can cause medical conditions but there are also many conditions that cause weight gain . . .

Common conditions associated with weight gain are stress, a buildup of toxins, insulin resistance, and genetic predispositions to obesity. The stress hormone cortisol can cause you to gain weight around the abdomen, and hormonal imbalances can make it difficult to combat weight gain, as well as lose weight. A buildup of toxins stored in our fat can also cause metabolic issues. A buildup of toxins can also be accompanied by insulin resistance, an imbalance of glucose levels in the blood.

Genetic predispositions to certain metabolic disorders, diabetes, and obesity can also be the cause of weight gain, and treating these conditions can not only result in weight loss but improve overall health.

An increase in body fat and weight loss resistance can be a sign of underlying medical conditions. Treating weight gain with a functional medicine approach ensures that the underlying causes of the weight gain are treated as well! A large percentage of our population is overweight or obese, and since all of us have unique genetic predispositions, there is no one-size-fits-all plan for weight loss. Exercise and dietary changes are not the only proper solution for weight loss for those with underlying medical conditions. Using a functional medicine approach, we look at any hormonal, environmental, psychological, and metabolic conditions that can be resulting in weight gain, and build a treatment plan around the cause – not the symptom.

Contact us today to talk about how functional medicine treatment can improve your health and help you lose weight this May.

Avoiding Pitfalls When Taking GLP-1 Agonists such as Semaglutide

The latest buzz in the medical world is the use of GLP-1 agonists, specifically for weight loss. Why the hype? Well, for the first time in my career, there is a medication for weight loss that has some decent data and results behind it. Of course, there are other medications that FDA has approved for weight loss, but none have as impressive of an impact on body weight and body mass index (height in proportion to weight) as the studies of these medications.

Understanding Biological Age: In-House Testing & Zoom Hybrid

Zoom Meeting: May 31, 6-7PM EST

Dr. Elisa Mercuro, DO, is pleased to offer a unique new learning experience. This hybrid event will start with a visit to Sparkle Health where you take a BioAge testing by TruDiagnostics. From there, you are encouraged to read the book and we will have a Zoom session to discuss the BioAge results in general and interventions to improve biological age. We will also use and discuss relevant information from “Young Forever” which you can apply to your specific results.

Cost of the event includes the testing and book. Upon registering, Sparkle Health will contact you to set up a time to visit for your BioAge test.

What is a BioAge Test?

A BioAge test gives you a measure of your biological age vs your chronological age as well as your telomere length.

Why Measure Age?

Aging is cellular loss of function. In longevity research, we track molecular markers that have been correlated with that aging process. While your chronological age will always progress at a fixed rate, biological age can show a summary of how a person’s lifestyle choices and behaviors are affecting their body.
We don’t all age in the same way, at the same rate.
