Is Your Cranium On The Move?

What causes abnormal movement of the cranium & all the components?

Dr. Elisa Mercuro, DO, Functional Medicine Certified Doctor

Life as you can imagine can lead to abnormal patterns of movement. It is not just trauma to the head but small or large traumas, acute or chronic events, and insults anywhere in the body can set up a pattern of compensation that can lead to abnormal motion. The abnormal motion impairs the individual’s ability to express the healing mechanism that is within all of us. Often people seek out Osteopathy due to an area of pain or a specific ailment. During a Cranial Osteopathic treatment, the osteopath may place hands on seemingly unrelated areas of the body. This is because sometimes the origin of the problem is not the area of the symptoms. The analogy is when a cat’s tail is pulled, the noise indicating a problem comes from the cat’s mouth. The connectivity of all the anatomical body compartments including the bones, fascia, connective tissue, nerves, vascular and lymphatic systems can allow for symptoms to manifest relative to that body’s response to whatever insult created the osteopathic lesion . . .

Tick Tips

How can you help prevent Lyme Disease?

Dr. Elisa Mercuro, DO, Functional Medicine Certified Doctor

Enjoying some warmer weather? So are the ticks! Let’s work on prevention.
First, prevent the tick bite – cover up your legs, use a natural tick spray. The one I use for my family is called YaYa Tick Ban and we find it very helpful.
Essential oils – particularly geranium may also be helpful.
Remove clothes – take off what you were wearing for the yard work, or outdoor play, and put them in the dryer for 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may have latched on or put them directly to wash.
Shower off – if possible take a shower or at the very least perform a tick check.

If you are bitten – if you get bit by a tick, know that Borrelia Burgdorferi – the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease is very common in our state. I will have no problem offering to you a preventative treatment of antibiotics (herbal or pharmaceutical). Please contact the office if this occurs. We, of course, will recommend proper probiotics to protect the gut lining.

I love The University of Massachusetts’ program for checking the tick – go to www.tickreport.com and there you can purchase a test for $50 to determine if the tick that bit you carries pathogens that cause Lyme Disease. Simply mail in the tick following the instructions and you get back a report within a few days. Please save the tick as this simple relatively inexpensive test can help determine how long we should treat you if bitten!

There is testing for YOU too – this can be a bit more complex but when needed I use a variety of labs to determine if Lyme Disease or a co-infection is a concern.
