This month we will be transitioning into Summer!

Celebrating the longest day of the year, a transitional marker that separates the old stage of life or season from the new. It can carry vulnerability and potency that is available to us when we intentionally choose to connect with that energy. The Summer Solstice reminds us that nothing lasts forever ~ we are part of an ever-changing world ~ living, dying, fading, expanding, learning, and growing. This constant change helps us appreciate what we love that much more and reminds us that things we don’t enjoy will also pass.

This is a wonderful time to choose some things in your life that you really want to embrace and others that you’ve been wanting to let go. You can start by writing a list of these things. Then rip them apart, move them around and prioritize them. The list of things you decide to bring into your life may go on a vision board in order of importance. Emphasize the important items with a visual element (photo, drawing, & poem). The things you want to remove from your life may feed the fire you light in the back yard at sunset. The fire itself has long been a symbol of the Solstice. For thousands of years, people all over Europe would light large bonfires. Fire festivals for Summer Solstice that remind us of the heat of the summer sun.

From our perspective we always encourage taking a step toward a healthier lifestyle. That will be different for each individual. Keep this in mind when you are creating your lists. Are you struggling with feeling tired? You can bring in a new bedtime routine or brand new bedding. Feeling pain and stress in your shoulders? You can ask a loved one for a back rub each evening or maybe it’s as big as letting go of that job that keeps you sitting or lifting for 40+ hours a week. Feeling overwhelmed with a certain relationship? Create some healthy boundaries and stick to them or gently let that person go. You can decide to do it all at once or slowly over the course of the month or year. Start with a plan!
There are always things in life that can use a little or big shift. Now is the right time to embrace that!

The Slow Burner

Supporting the ‘Slow Burner’ for Weight Loss

Just eat less and exercise more and you will maintain a negative calorie balance and you will lose weight. There is just one problem with this math problem… there are several influences that affect calories in and calories out that result in a variable metabolic rate (the number of calories we burn). To a slow burner, the math does not add up. It seems like their metabolism is slower than the people around them. It feels like it takes more effort to get even a little movement on the scale. The fact is, our metabolic rate, the number of calories burned at baseline and with activity, is variable from person to person. So, what can we do to support someone who is a “slow burner” or who seemingly is maintaining a negative calorie balance but just not seeing results?

Did you know that sugar is more addictive than cocaine? Yes that sweet, white powder we have all grown up using is one of the most addictive substances on earth. It is derived from plant sources such as beets and sugar cane. But, just because it comes from plants doesn’t mean it’s OK to put into our bodies.

Sugar goes by many different names – glucose, fructose, sucrose, dextrose, maltose, cane sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, turbinado sugar, the list goes on. Then you have the artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, and natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, molasses date sugar… You get the idea.

An occasional treat isn’t the worst thing in the world, but the challenge comes when that “treat” isn’t just occasional. Our cravings for sweets affect how we taste our food and how our body metabolizes the sugar we are eating. This impacts our overall health and increases our likelihood of chronic disease such as obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It depletes our nutrients and affects oral health, mood, hormones, and the gut microbiome. JOIN TODAY

Biological Age Discussion

Understanding & Impacting Biological Age

Wednesday, June 14 · 6 – 7pm EDT
Led by Dr. Elisa Mercuro, DO
ONLINE BOOK DISCUSSION

Please join me in a discussion of biological age testing. We will also use and discuss relevant information from “Young Forever” and how we can use this information to improve our health and longevity.

What is a BioAge Test?
A BioAge test give you a measure of your biological age vs your chronological age as well as your telomere length.

The TruAge PACE is a biological pace of aging test that focuses on short-term changes in methylation that translate into long-term impacts to health. It acts like a speedometer for aging, where values above 1 are ‘accelerated aging’ and below 1 are ‘slowed aging.’

The primary algorithm offered in PACE is the Dunedin Pace of Aging algorithm (DunedinPACE) – developed over 50 years and trained on longitudinal phenotypic data. Dr. Eileen Crimmons in USC evaluated DunedinPACE, and found it was the most predicative age-related biomarker for health consequences.

WHY Measure Age?
Aging is cellular loss of function. In longevity research, we track molecular markers that have been correlated with that aging process. While your chronological age will always progress at a fixed rate, biological age can show a summary of how a person’s lifestyle choices and behaviors are affecting their body.

We don’t all age in the same way, at the same rate.
