Let The Sparks Fly

Wishing You Safe, Healthy Celebrating!

The 4th of July is a time to celebrate America’s independence and enjoy family and friends. With all of the celebration going on, it can be easy to let your guard down. We’ve got some tips for what to look out for to help you all have a safe and happy Fourth.

IDEAS FOR STAYING SAFE THIS MONTH

For parents of young children – obviously fireworks can be very loud to a baby’s delicate ears. Not only can the noises scare your little one, in certain cases it can damage your child’s hearing. If you’re going to a large display, bring along a pair of noise-canceling headphones or good ear plugs for protection.

Remember sunscreen ~ search for something Organic/Natural and read the ingredients. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or if you’re swimming/sweating, apply every 45 minutes. Use a good amount to coat all of your baby’s skin, and yours too! Keep younger babies in the shade of trees, sun hats, and light but long clothing.

Kids who are mobile can wander off and can quickly become lost in a crowd. If you’re going to a parade, festival, or any large well-attended event, put a temporary ID tattoo on your child. If you’re not 100% confident that your child can say his or her full name and phone number during a scary and stressful situation, these tattoos can be a lifesaver. You can also use a sharpie to write your phone number on your child’s arm, then seal it with some liquid bandage.

If you’re having or attending a pool/lake party this month, find a responsible adult or two to be honorary lifeguards. Adults can get very busy talking, think another caregiver is watching, and maybe drinking some alcohol. When children are in the water you need watchful and dedicated eyes. If you have trouble finding someone comfortable counting heads and keeping a constant eye on the water, call your local YMCA for a list of lifeguards for hire, or do an internet search for lifeguard companies near you.

Cheers to enjoying this month safely!

Strawberry Blonde Mocktail

Recipe

Ingredients

– 2 cups fresh strawberries
– 1 cup red grapes
– 1 inch piece fresh ginger
– 1/3 cup basil leaves, tightly packed
– 1 cup ice cubes
– Pinch Himalayan salt
– 2 cups sparkling water

Instructions

1. Run the strawberries, grapes, ginger, and basil leaves through your juicer or blend together. If blending – add together in a blender with 1/2 cup of water (or more if needed) and blend until smooth. Pour juice through a fine mesh sieve or nut bag to strain out the pulp. For the record I forgot my strainer for class and it still came out delicious – and had more fiber! ; )
2. Split the ice cubes between two glasses, pour the juice into the glass and stir in Himalayan salt to taste. Top up with sparkling water and serve.
